Kelvin Hall staff get back on their bikes and take Millport by storm

The team at Kelvin Hall are very proud of our Gold award with the Green Tourism Business Scheme and continue to think of ways to encourage staff to think about how they travel in to work.

We have been working with the wonderfully supportive Sustrans over the past 18 months with a funded a series of events and opportunities to encourage people to think about their journey to work each day. To encourage cyclists we have purchased waterproofs in case the Glasgow weather turns stormy and you want to stay dry on your cycle home.

As well as this we have set up a few Dr Bike sessions to get our wheels back in road worthy condition. We threw a Winter Warmer’ event in November 2018 where staff were encouraged to actively travel to work. 22 staff members took part and cycled, walked and scootered their way from home in to Kelvin Hall. We travelled over 140 miles that day using leg power over less sustainable methods of transport. Staff were rewarded with a hot drink on arrival in one of Cordia’s new reusable cups as well as cosy gloves or bike lights to keep them going through the winter.

Keeping up the challenge we decided to encourage some of our colleagues to get back on their bikes with a day out cycling round Millport this month. Again, Sustrans supported the team covering travel and bike hire costs and also supplying us with natty Sustrans tee shirts and flags. 15 members of Kelvin Hall staff attended the day with representatives from the management, gym, front of house and membership team. We were also joined by some of our lovely colleagues from the National Library of Scotland for this team building bonanza. Some of the team hadn’t been on their bikes for over 18 years so it was really beneficial to build their bike confidence and get them back in the saddle. We hope to do lots more activities like this in the future.
